“Safe?” said Mr Beaver …”Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
― C.S. Lewis,
Life is full of emotional tension – tears and laughter, joy and sadness, mourning and hope. It is a great mystery to me how these things can all somehow coexist with each other in one heart at one time. We can be sad and heartbroken when someone we love and appreciate is taken home to Jesus. We can also be full of joy, knowing that they are with their Savior and no longer in pain.
We are created in God’s image, and He is in some ways a “walking contradiction.” Lion and Lamb. Three in One. King and Servant. Whenever I attempt to understand God, I’m reminded of all the ways that He defies explanation or understanding. Yet these apparent contradictions also somehow reveal who He is in a way that no straightforward explanation ever could.
I love how “contradictions” show up side by side in Scripture and in our own lives. It gives me courage knowing that God is not easily shoved into any one of my labels or boxes. And in so many ways, His Creation is the same. Human beings, who can feel so much all at once. Who can be so much all at once. We are truly complex and intricate.
If we believed that about one another, I think the world would be a much kinder place. A hope-filled place. A place where we would be less inclined to dig in, to correct, or to reject – instead, we might listen, we might forgive. We might love.
